52 more indicted in ongoing drug sting
There's also a gang oath that tells members to "stay strap (armed), and keep bustin'." Blue was one of several suspects picked up in a row Thursday morning. Just before, when the six-deep team of undercover officers pulled up in two vehicles at the home of Melvin Travis, the suspect was standing at the door. He ran to the back and three officers vaulted a chain link fence to cut off his escape. Two others tackled him in the kitchen with a small amount of marijuana. His car was also towed. It's alleged he sold from the car. Travis, 31, denied selling dope, but he's on video. "I didn't sell no dope out of the car," he attests. The officers found a loaded revolver under a bed in the house. "This is some cold-blooded (expletive)," he exclaimed as he was taken out in cuffs.

Unlikely allies fight same-sex marriage in Iowa
Because Iowa doesn't have a residency requirement, Hurley believes same-sex couples from out of state will marry here, then sue their home states for recognition. The court likely will not rule until 2009. But Ratliff and Hurley say it's imprudent to wait. So do 45 of Iowa's 100 state representatives, who are co-sponsoring legislation on a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. When surveyed on how they would vote, the Iowa House of Representatives was split 50-50. This will be a critical week because legislation concerning the constitutional amendment must make it out of committee by Thursday or the bill won't be voted on this session. Ratliff and Hurley have been two of the loudest voices in this legislative and cultural fight, organizing rallies against same-sex marriage and lobbying the Legislature to let Iowans vote on its legality.

Raccoons flourish in town
Raccoons have become a pain in the deck to Judy Lentz, who is unfortunate enough to have her patio chosen as one of east Medford's more disgusting venues. Her wooden deck has become a "latrine site," the No. 1 spot where the neighborhood raccoons do their number twos every other night. .
An infernal tax scheme comes back
Add a $20 tax to cars, trucks and motorcycles. Tax speeders. Add a $1-per-pack tax to cigarettes. Add a one-cent tax to the statewide sales tax and perhaps another one-cent regionally. Expand the sales tax to groceries and to 174 categories of services, using the proceeds to reduce property taxes on homesteads and cars, trucks and motorcycles. Georgians who prefer Democrats and who feared that putting Republicans in control under the Gold Dome represented a lurch to the right needn't have worried. This is where the old gang left off. House Speaker Glenn Richardson appeared last week before the House Ways and Means Committee to propose something that Democrats never dared bring forth when Zell Miller and his band started studying tax revision 16 years ago.
